It isn't the "wood." It's the moisture. The wood can be VERY old, and if it isn't under some moisture problem, it won't be a problem. But you won't know about that until you take off the trim - at least. If it continues to leak (or get moisture) the ants will be back, no matter what you do. The moisture problem is what needs to get fixed. The ants are the symptom, not the cause. Water (or moisture) is the problem.
