Hello. Thank you for your site. It seems very informative. I live in the Midwest and admit that I am an ant novice. Upon moving into our house last summer we noticed a few ants that appeared to be carpenter ants. Within a few weeks we did not noticed any more.

Now that it is spring, we have noticed quite a few more. We have both carpenter ants (at least they look like all the pictures I see on the internet -kind of a heart shaped head) and the small, tiny ants that we have always seen in the spring time. I am not worried about the small ants. I am however concerned about the large ones.

I estimate that I have smashed somewhere between 10 and 20 carpenter ants in the last few weeks. After a substantial rain, I saw at least six in one night. I see them mainly on the first floor, but have seen one on the inside of a window of a second story bedroom.

The majority are found near a gas fireplace and built in cabinet (some have even been inside the cabinet) as well as in the kitchen. On the outside of the fireplace wall, there is an old (15 years or so) deck located there as well. We have checked around the wall and in the basement and do not notice any evidence of a nest. I have never seen any in the basement.

Do you have any advice for treating the problem? Besides wanting to make sure we do not have a major problem, I do not enjoy seeing them crawling across my counters.

Thanks!
