Many thanks for the great site! We've been in our home for 16 years, and had occasional (seasonal) small black ants in the garage for the first 14 years or so. We'd have a few runners, then a few flyers, then nothing. I did find a nest once, outside under the concrete slab. I haven't read enough on your site to know if I did the right thing, but I grabbed two bottles that were nearby, held my breath, and dumped them on -- bleach and ammonia!
Fast forward to summer before last...we were out playing in the yard when an exterminator rolled up. The two gentlemen offered to look around and see if they could see any issues. They found the small black ants, but we reassured them that those ants were not a problem for us. NO JOKE...within 3 to 4 weeks, there were small black ants making inroads in our home! These ants were different...smaller, and faster. They seemed to be resistant to bait; avoided the baited areas, and just went for spills on the counters and floor.
Is it just too much of a coincidence? They actually came back a few months later, following up...
Have you ever heard of an exterminator planting ants?
I have tried making several concoctions, and put down Terro granules outside. The number of ants that I see indoors waxes and wanes, so I'm not sure if my treatment methods have been a help.
Recently, I have seen larger black ants. These move more slowly, and are very attracted to the Terro liquid bait that I set out.
SO, thank you many times over for the words of encouragement. You never know...if I'm a rich old lady someday, I may just have to leave a fat chunk to you!
