I have a question about carpenter ants. My husband and I recently moved in to our first home in March. We had a pest inspection done along with the home inspection and no evidence of wood destroying insects was found.

We have an addition to our house that includes a one-car garage, two bedrooms above that, and a small breezeway/porch along the back. The "foundation" for that porch is simply cinder block slabs. A friend who was watching my house for me one weekend told me that she saw large black ants marching out of a gap between two of the cinder blocks, and were crawling in a line along a wooden stake we had in our backyard leftover from putting in fresh fencing. She told me to call my home inspector, which I did, but I haven't heard back. Calls to a pest control company have me feeling like I should be panicking.

My husband thinks we don't really have a problem since they are outside, and thinks we can take care of this ourselves. I bought what I thought were carpenter ant bait traps, but turns out they were just for regular old household ants. Gave them a shot anyway and, no surprise, they didn't work. So I bought a carpenter ant/termite killing spray and have been spraying along the foundation of the back porch. The first time I did that, I kept an eye out for two days and didn't see any ants. Yesterday, however, I went back out and saw about 6 or so large, black ants crawling around my deck, the back of my house, and the fresh wood fencing. So I sprayed again with the killing spray, this time all around the foundation of the house, and pulled away any weeds/old dead leaves that were up against the foundation.

My question is, am I doing enough? I have seen a few show up in my house, but that was when I brought in a wooden ladder from the garage to paint, so I'm wondering if they just hitched a ride on that. The other ones I have seen inside have been dead, just lying in the middle of my floor. I bought some carpenter ant bait off of Amazon (Maxforce Gel and granules). Will that still work despite spraying the killing spray along the foundation? And, does the killing spray only kill when it's sprayed directly on the ants themselves?
