Elli, firstly, don't worry about how long your post (and email) was, I rec'd an email over TWICE as long as yours was, last night. I'm wondering how to answer...

And I'm glad you posted on the board, I prefer you do this as it gives other visitors a chance to see your problem (and my answers) and helps all of us. Thanks!

Hate to say this, but I'm with your husband - sorta. You don't really have a problem, you have the "Springtime Thing." Happens every spring. And this kind of thing is what exterminators SURVIVE on, and wait for. That's not actually a bad thing, except for the rip-off exterminators that take advantage of the insect fears that people have and use scare tactics to wring money out of them with scary stories and sham treatments. There is NO reason to ever panic with insect problems, they are easily handled by any exterminator, you just need a GOOD one!

Ok, now to the crux of your problem, which isn't a problem at all. First of all, discontinue any and all treatments with chemicals. Save all the receipts you have on the unopened ones and take them back!

Spraying foundations with chemicals can trap your ants inside and make everything worse, especially if you've used the wrong chemicals - which I'll bet you have, even if you bought the stuff that says "ants." If the sprays you purchased are ready-mixed, it's the wrong stuff. It all boils down to the fact that "you can buy a scalpel, but it doesn't make you a doctor..."

The stuff you CAN'T take back, just hold onto it, but don't use it. WAIT. Just wait a bit, you'll see that this all calms down soon. Just because you see a few ants, doesn't mean you have to do anything about it by going nuts about it. Remember, you are never more that 6 feet from an ant in your whole life. This goes for spiders too. And assuming you've made it this far, you'll be just fine.

To answer your question about the residual effect of insecticides on ants, most of the ready-mixed types DON'T have a residual, and even if they say they do, they don't have enough. It's just like the drug industry - and, keep in mind, that 99% of the insecticides are manufactured by the drug industry... Scary, huh?

Also remember, ants are not dirty, they don't carry or vector any diseases and all but a tiny few are absolutely harmless.

So, hold off all those antics, bite the bullet and WAIT!

Get back if you have questions, but do it on this board!

---John
