I just wanted to say thank you for this site and all the information you have shared here!
I have had periodic, abrupt infestations of large (carpenter?) ants since I moved into this house. Nothing for months, then piles of ants (living and dead) and frass...
I have researched before, but never found anyone else who referenced my situation as well as you do (log house, cathedral ceilings with styrofoam insulation, surrounded by trees...).
I am doing my best not to panic, following your suggestions, and hoping for the best...
It worries me a bit though - we re-roofed (metal this time) a few years ago and cut back the tree limbs that overhung it, and though there are far fewer ants, the sudden appearance of piles of them still occurs.
Last night, after I hadn't seen an ant in days - I head up the stairs and there they are. Dozens of them crawling around, and they're falling from the ceiling...
I vacuumed them up last night and more of them (but not as many) this morning, and then got online -
Any suggestions welcomed! (I'm in the mountains of western Virginia)
