I found citronella ants in about 15 feet of the inside french drain in the basement. I noticed lots of brown dirt in some sections of the french drain and hence I was alerted to the ants. The basement itself is finished, but about one quarter is the utility space so that part is unfinished. The basement is dry, and the sump typically has no water.
I called an exterminator and he said that the ants came into the french drain from under the house. Given that the french drain is roughly 7 feet below the ground level, do the ants burrow that deeply underground?

He is recommending treating the ants as they will keep spreading, is what he said.

Thanks for any insights.
