I took your advice and watched my basement and foundation walls for several weeks. I kept a log of what I saw in the basement at the same time every day. The numbers started at 10 or so and then slowly tapered down to zero as the weeks passed. I have not seen a carpenter ant in my basement for a couple of weeks now.
However, there are lots outside. They seem to enjoy the maple tree flowers that are blowing about. I typically find several at any given time walking along the side of my foundation. I saw one today with wings that scurried under my siding as I got close. I think they are foraging since I see lots coming under a fence from my neighbors yard and walking along my driveway.
My neighbor's house is old and has lots of garden debris and dried leaves under the bushes. My guess is that the ants reside there.
