Carpenter ants were showing up in the cabinet under my sink, getting into the garbage pail there. I saw no sawdust or other evidence of the ants anywhere else in the house, but I got tired of meeting three or four of them every time I threw something away and normal ant traps didn’t work, so I purchased Maxforce Carpenter Ant Bait Gel & Advance Carpenter Ant Bait.
I hit them harder than was recommended, making four bait stations on flat sheets of plastic, each with a dab of the sugar-based Maxforce and a half thimble-full of the protein-based Advance. I put all four under the sink and sealed the cabinet. 24 hours later the bait was completely gone—like it had been vacuumed up. I saw no ants. I reloaded each station and replaced them. 24 hours later about half the bait was gone and I saw a few sluggish ants.
I let the bait sit for a week, but it seemed that the ants had enough.
I opened the cabinet and was thinking the job was done and I should probably toss the bait stations when 12 or 14 big black carpenter ants came boiling up out of the base of the cabinet. This was more than I had ever seen at one time. I quickly re-baited the stations and closed the cabinet. 24 hours later almost all the bait was gone. I re-baited the stations, but saw no more action. A week later I tossed the stations and cleaned up, thinking my mission was accomplished.
But now, more than three weeks since I started, I have ants all over the house. About 80% of them seem poisoned, unable to run straight, but some seem just fine. And they’re everywhere except under the cabinet—on floors, walls, in the bathroom sink, and especially in my basement where I never found ants before.
Does anyone have a clue what’s going on here? These poisons were supposed to take out a colony in 3 to five days.
