As for tree with ants, I tell people not to worry about it. Yeah, you may see a few (or even none) so I always recommended a wait and watch before doing anything rash. The ones you may see have been driven from their homes, so to speak, but within a few days you'll be back to normal. And even if you have a "problem," it can easily be rectified, just get back to me with a few details.
Yes, as trees get older, they aren't as viable, and dead branches become havens for all kinds of insects, not only ants! Which, BTW, don't hurt the trees. If you want to keep the tree, (I love trees) and can spend the money, ask him if it's worth it. If you have some years left, and want to save the $$$ to pull the tree down, but don't forget, you'll eventually have to pull it down anyway, so save up for that! Not sure I remember where you are, but a couple of tough winters can hit a tree hard... Always hit me hard lol.
