Sorry for the delay, Donna. Sent you an email that I was here!
As far as the ant and the tree are concerned, the ants won't "hurt" the tree, they'll actually HELP it. Naturally, that means LOTS of CA's around, and furthering your panic, I assume...
An unusual amount of the ants can also signal that the tree is not as viable as it once was. It's up to you on that. I also hate to pull any tree down, the ants (to me) would not be a concern.
If you already employ an exterminator, advise him of your "problem." You might ask him about a Termidor perimeter treatment around the outside of your home. It's generally a one-shot deal, and in my experience it has a season long effect. If ants are your target, it's very good and not expensive. Generally, it's a backpack or power spray, our prices were rarely over $200-$250.
Using Tero? Forget it, let him do it. Won't really help with the outside ants. Besides, they're very picky, and what worked last time, doesn't work this time. Let them do it, and if they're REALLY bad, call them. We never minded doing call-backs at all!
