Hi John,

First off, thank you so much for this resource, I can totally identify with the feelings of everyone on this board that Carpenter Ants cause panic and anxiety but reading through your information has been a huge relief. It almost feels like a support group for people with ant anxiety, or Ant-xiety? Maybe you should become a psychiatrist...

Anyway, we recently moved house. Our old house had some carpenters around in the yard that were brought in with some mulch, which gave me huge anxiety but we only ever found one in the actual house and after a while they seemed to disappear.

After moving to our new house in the Fall I was very relieved to be CA free but as the warmer weather came in Spring we started seeing them in the yard. The previous owners have put a lot of wood in the yard, with lots of railway ties, raised bed planters, two wooden sheds, tonnes of mulch and a brand new wooden deck, plus quite a few older trees, some stumps and various piles of wood dotted around. So it's quite the playground for the CAs. Until yesterday I'd just seen a few foragers around, and found a few in the gutters (which needed cleaning), including some winged CAs. However yesterday I opened one of the sheds and found a trail of them going along the door sill, I followed them and they seemed to be going down the fence that runs to the back of the yard and then disappearing into the trees. The shed is about 10-15ft from the house and the majority of the activity seemed to be behind the shed going away from the house into the area of trees, mulch and railway ties so my immediate thought was that it's not a huge problem and I can probably leave them alone, as long as they are not coming to the house. Is that correct? Or should I be more worried? There were probably about 20-30 I spotted and the more I looked around the more of them I found dotted around in the mulch. Longer term I plan to remove some of the wood that's lying around which will hopefully help, but at the same time if they're keeping to the wood and not bothering the house I'm tempted to leave them be. The house is slab on grade, which I know you say can be susceptible to infestation, and we've had a lot of the small black ants around since we moved in.

Anyway, I was just hoping for some peace of mind, I'm trying not to freak out and panic (as you advise) but it's a bit unnerving seeing so many in the yard, not too far from the house. Should I be concerned or leave them alone?

One other quick question, I live in the Fraser Valley in BC. It looks like Termidor is not readily available in Canada, do you know of any equivalent here or of a recommended pest control expert in this area that might have access to it?

Sorry for the long message, but I appreciate the time and energy you put into maintaining this resource, it has been a life saver!

Best wishes

Tim
