Bald-faced hornerts - never use the same nest again?

I've got a large hornet nest in the outside gable end of my garden shed. It's at our cottage and they are really no problem except they are very close to the access door for the canoe.

I don't want to kill them for no good reason but would like to be able to get the canoe out next year (it's already away).

I have heard that the bald-faced hornets never reuse the same nest. Also, they do not overwinter. If so, and I just leave the old nest where it is, those hornets should die off when winter arrives and then next year that spot will be less interesting as it has an old nest?

Or will they just build a new nest beside the old one?

My problem is that I am only there from time to time, so they get a good head start. I'd like to avoid destroying a nest if possible - how can I discourage them from using that spot?

Thanks
Steve
