Just to close out the case. I have (hopefully) taken care of the basement. The first day I "set" the traps (rat "snap" traps) I caught the biggest white footed mouse I've ever seen -- a female. I suspect she was the one that had shaken off the glue traps.

Over the next two days I caught five more white footed mice, all about adult size. I suspect it was a family.

Since that time the traps and baits have been undisturbed.

I did get a UV light. It's a compact fluorescent that fits a standard socket. I put it in a drop light fixture. It found a spot where my dog apparently had an accident, so I'm assuming it's the right wavelength. I haven't found any obvious trails, but I picked up a little yellow glow on the traps.
