Mice have sensitive everything. Except vision. They can see about 4 inches, so he wasn't "looking" at you. They can detect movement, so if you (or anything) moved, they would detect that.
Really difficult to seal off a house, they can squeeze through any hole that lets their head in - that's about the size of a dime.
Mice are also fiercely territorial, so relocation usually means a pretty quick (and not too nice) death. Besides, they're vectors of many diseases, don't worry about using lethal techniques to get rid of them. Best are snap traps or glueboards, appropriately placed.
