No "barrier" is necessary unless you have a problem. And even if you have a problem, barriers aren't what's used nowadays. An outside treatment with Termidor is MUCH more effective because it is a NON repellent - they don't even know it's there, they get it ON them, then contact their friends and relatives and it works out to be much like the domino effect. Very effective for ants, but not necessary until you have a problem.
