You can probably do the job with glueboards and snap traps. As far as the rodent-proofing is concerned, often the exterminator is better at that because he knows what to look for and how a mouse thinks and acts.
So it's a toss-up. Why don't you go thru my mouse page and see if you think you want to tackle it yourself. Cost of an exterminator can be a wide range, we would charge about $125 or so, depending on where you were.
If you decide to use an exterminator, I generally tell people to skip the biggies and try for a trusted, local independent, someone with a physical office within your calling area. Try to find a guy that will work without you having to sign a “contract” and supply service on an as-needed basis, and a company that sends an exterminator, not a salesman.
