Yes, there's the danger that one (or more) might die inside, but there's really nothing you can do about that. The smell will go away.

Then you'll need to find out the reason you have rats outside and address that problem, or you'll just get rats again. Seal off any holes into the structure to make it more difficult for them to get in.

Forget traps - rats are too smart for traps, you'll only get the juveniles and you'll never get the King rat.
