Thanks, John - per your comments here I'm wondering if I just caught a juvenile; it was only 5 inches or so in body length and so I'm not sure it wasn't a big mouse. But, there were 3-4 burrow trails, so I'm thinking rat.

I called our pest control person who handles bugs for us; we're in Atlanta, GA and there's snow on our roof right now, so it may be a pain to find entry points. Plus, our attic sucks to get in and out of - a 2x3 hole in our bedroom closet that I have to squeeze past clothes to enter - so I hoped to handle it ourselves.

It's been bitterly cold so I don't think the rat will want to go outside to drink. Any advice?
