Well.... Skinny info to start with, I don't know where you are, what animals might be in your area, what your house looks like and so forth.

And, of course, it COULD be mice/rats, I've learned in this business you never say never.

Maybe set a rat snap trap UNDER the dirt... Rats are pretty smart - they avoid new objects in their path. Mice are stupid and will run right into a snap trap.

So unless you have some other kind of animal in there, maybe you want to try to leave some chum out - different things, see what it takes, then bait a trap with that.
