My husband and I just moved to new home about a month ago. Over the past two days, I had been noticing a couple large black flies in the house (first time I saw them), so I let them outside. Last night, we were sitting down in the evening and I saw ANOTHER one- I looked up and there were about 15 of them, all over our walls. More in the kitchen. So we went on a "killing spree," smushing them and spraying them with insecticide. We went to bed having killed 25 or so of these guys. This morning, I went into the basement and there were ~20 flying around. I sprayed Hot Shot for flying insects, came back to find the bodies and clean up. There are still a couple buzzing around and I need to figure out:
1) what they are
2) why the sudden appearance?
3) how to get rid of them
4) how to prevent them from coming back?
These flies are larger than the average housefly, and extremely active. They did not seem particularly attracted to food, but got very "excited" when I turned on the lights. They don't seem to be biting.
I checked our screens for major holes and couldn't find any-- and there were SO MANY FLIES that I can't imagine they'd have all gotten in the same way. They have to have just hatched inside.
We live in Massachusetts, if that helps.
Thanks in advance!
