Well, you won't find squirrels underground, I think your problem might be rats... Any reported rat sightings in the neighborhood? Any overflowing trash cans or dumpsters around the area?

Mice are pretty stupid, snap traps are good for them. Rats, however, are much smarter and won't be fooled with snap traps. You'll have to bait the rats, if that's what they are.

I think you need to get to the bottom of the problem, if you have that much subsidence, there could be big problems.
