If it's indeed rats, I almost always recommend baiting. It's quicker and a whole lot less labor intensive - and that means less money. Trapping rats takes wads of experience, so unless you know what you're doing, you will probably be more successful using bait.
Can there be a "smell" problem? Of course. There's always that problem. You handle that when it comes up, there are too many variables until that happens.
Might be a good idea to get a good guy around you. Don't forget, you have to figure out where those rats came from and report and/or handle that problem also. You might get some hints from my rat page (above, in case I haven't mentioned it).
In looking for your exterminator, you'll probably be better off if you skip the biggies and talk to a couple of independents, not salesmen and don't ever respond to scare tactics from anyone in this industry.
