You need to go around the OUTSIDE of the house (at night) with all the basement lights on, so you can see any holes they could possibly get through. Do your patching OUTSIDE, thet's where they get in.
If you have MULTIPLE mice it can smell, no matter what they say, but it only lasts a short time, and it is an effective way to get rid of them. Some people's "smellers" aren't as good as other people....
Forget the shake-away stuff, you don't need it - it really doesn't work all that well anyway.
No bait outside unless it's in tamper-proof bait stations, otherwise you have no idea of what is eating your bait. Assuming you have done good job of rodent proofing from the outside, it isn't needed either.
Mice show up where the food is, normally. When they do, use glueboards or snap traps to handle the problem. Use bait in an attached garage, if you have one, that's gonna be a weak point. Go thru my mouse page for more hints.
