An "occasional" rat? How 'bout ZERO rats? Get that exterminator back there and get rid of ALL the rats!

As far as the smell is concerned, you must get rid of all the rats or this problem will continue. The smell will stop when all the rats are gone and there are no more dead ones.

If you can't find the dead ones, you'll just have to wait until the carcass mummifies and is no longer able to smell.

The exterminator must take care of the rats outside or you'll get them back again.
