If it's only an inch or so, like you say, it's probably a chipmunk. They do hibernate, but sometimes they're late.

If it is, put some rodent bait down the hole and cover the hole. Check the rest of the house too. You don't want animals doing that, they will excavate around the outside and eventually your basement can leak. This is especially true of groundhogs. I have seen collapsed block walls caused by extensive tunneling.

The bait takes at least 5-7 days to work, so keep checking around the outside for a couple of weeks or so. Until the ground freezes.
