Rats are pretty smart, Susan... An adult rat doesn't get fooled too easily. They're wise to you! :)

Use bait - yes, they might die inside a wall somewhere, but that's the chance you take. The smell will go away and it won't hurt you. Bait will do the trick.

After you get all of the dead, go outside and plug all the holes and find where the rats are coming from and bait them out there too. They came from somewhere close, where they have a steady food supply.
