They can get through steel wool. They can't get through hardware cloth. And you get the holes close to the ground for rats, the ones up high are generally squirrels.

Astually, if they're in the couch, you can probably get them. If you can't you can throw the couch out. Getting them out of walls is the tough part.

Really important is finding out where they came from on the outside. If you don't take care of those, they'll just come back.
