Shake, rattle and roll all you want, they'll probably just hunker down and wait it out. And it really isn't the DEAD rats you have to worry about, remember, rats leak urine all the time, so that smell, once they live there for awhile, will become overpowering.

Obviously, the rat(s) you are dealing with are going to be difficult to get with ANY kind of trap - they're wise to you. Also remember that rats are smarter than most dogs and a lot more shy. You will get rid of the problem quicker and cheaper if you (or someone) baits.

Cover the couches? With what? Rats can chew thru most anything - I've seen them go thru cinder blocks!

Repellents? hahaha. Like what kind? Never saw a "repellent" work on anything, actually.
