I have some bricks, concrete tiles, and hurricane shutters I thought of covering it with. I know it sounds silly. :)

Sometimes I have water leaking on front of the fireplace when it rains. Where the stone fireplace meets the wall is covered by crown moulding. I looked up there with a flashlight last night and saw huge holes in between. I saw this pale striped or pattern tail. My first thought it was a lizard except it looked more fatter. It moved slowly forward kinda of like a snake!

Do rats have a striped/pattern tail? Aren't the rats/squirrels enemies with snakes? I've heard squirrels move around there.

I suspect rats and mice have come through here since there is evidence of droppings on the mantel. I've also had cockroaches come in.

I need to get this covered in case it is a snake. Since it's not a flat surface, can you recommend how to seal it? I'm kind of afraid to remove the crown moulding though. I just want to stuff it with concrete LOL. I hate doing this before the rats are dead, but better than a snake inside the house.

Thanks for all the help.
