The three animals you mention are three that have actually thrived in the presence of man - and women! Rats and mice are others that have also!

All of those, except mice, have been driven into our sewer systems and use them for transportation to other urban areas. The sewers, of course, vector diseases to these animals, and some people (more than you might imagine) actually FEED these animals, either on purpose, or by leaving pet food, or food scraps outside for easy pickings.

We just finished a rat job at a local pizza place, the rats weren't inside the pizza place, they were OUTSIDE, living off the food scraps from their dumpster. The shop owner was amazed the rats could actually scale the metal dumpster! (Silly boy!)

The 'possums are probably the most harmless of these. Just leave them alone and don't leave any attractants outside!
