Sounds strange to me too, Brian... Many kinds of small animals would like the tissues, they would use it for nesting materials. The clay-like stuff does not sound like anything I've seen either. And you say a "huge" amount of the clay. How huge? More than a small animal would carry or move? Your IP says you're in Detroit, is this true?

Have any foodstuffs been broken into inside the house, or trash cans raided? And have you walked around the outside to check for obvious entry points?

Most outside animals would want to go in and out - as opposed to mice or rats which would tend to stay inside, once they got in.

And your dogs, are they outside dogs? Are they small and possibly afraid of a small animal, such as a rat? And have you had problems in the past with squirrels or possibly rats? Lastly, does anyone feed the birds outside?
