Yes, that's what happens, Jenn... The maggots are fly larva that have eaten the rat carcass. They will morph into flies, which will come later, depending on temperatures. Not a whole lot you can do about that either. Luckily, they end after a few days or so, but there will be LOTS of them.

The whole process has a nasty "ick" factor, definitely. The most important thing to do is to seal up the entrance points the rats are using and to take care of the rats on the OUTSIDE too.

Demand a REAL exterminator for all of this, don't let your landlord or maintenance men do this.

Don't take any crap!

And I think I would insist on some kind of rebate for your rent, because of the ick factor. Ask him how he would like this to happen in his OWN house!
