No, I am not certain that what I saw was a rat. It was too fast to see details. What I am certain about is size (abt 6 inches) and color (gray). It was not a squirrel (too small and no fluffy tail, nor a mouse (too big and the steps were too heavy as it ran). It also traveled very closely to the foundation and scooted through a roughly 2-inch gap under the shed, which I understand to be rat-like behavior.

Regarding food source: I do not feed birds, not since we had squirrel problems several years ago. However, we do have neighbors who do and our townhouse is an end unit only a few yards from where trash is collected twice a week. The water source I am guilty of providing. This spring we began setting out a ground level bird bath. This we will now likely have to change. Would a birdbath on a pedestal be okay? But the main question is what do I have under the shed and if it's rats, how do we take care of it?
