Looks like mouse droppings, but squirrel droppings look like that too. Squirrels won't be out at night, so unless he gets them in the early morning or evening, it's probably mice.

Try an UNBAITED trap placed in the same spot - make him LOOK harder, thus getting caught...

BTW, that's a pretty old trap.... If you have a squirrel trap, put it out there all closed up and baited. Mice will be able to get thru and get the bait. Then you'll know you're dealing with a mouse. I would guess mice, they poop a LOT, all over the place.
