I have a PJ hydranga that was big and beautiful about 15 years old....this year it just died on me. I took a clipping to a local nursery and they said they did not see any evidence of bacteria or fungus and asked if I had voles. Well, there was one stuck in the basement window well last year and we have chipmunk holes all over the place this year. My neighbor feeds everything from birds to wild animals. Anyway, I found I could just pull the hydranga right out of the ground cause the roots were nonexistent so I guess the problem is voles. Nursery said to spray with castor oil as that should help with the chipmunks and voles as they do not like the smell. Do you think this will work?
I had the exterminator put traps out last year for chipmunks and all that was left was a few feet and one trap had a possum with a stuck head in the box the trap was in. That was the end of my chipmunk trapping days. Now all I have are pot covers when I see one. They sit on my back step and almost ran my grandkid down yesterday when he was playing on the ground level patio.
