Sam, it's because they're a "boom and bust" bug. That is, some years you see hardly any, the next year (or the year after that) you see LOTS. Why? Hard to say. Usually it's environmental factors, MANY factors, so you really can't predict what's happening, or what's going to happen. It just happens.
And they come in EVERYWHERE! Any tiny crack they can get into they do. If that leads inside, they can wind up inside. Not really a whole lot you can do about it, you could use a hundred cases of caulk and the little devils could STILL find their way in somewhere... I know that's not what anyone likes to hear, but that's the way it works.
Frankly, I think it's really a waste of time (and money) to try and do anything about it. Sure, seal up the obvious cracks, that will help, but you'll never really end the problem forever. Houses develop those cracks over time, it's like wrinkles lol. Everybody gets wrinkles!
So fix the obvious and the easy to fix places and don't worry about the stuff that's too high or out of the way. Hopefully the next year will be better. Although it could be worse, you just never ever know.
Personally, I think using insecticides, for a harmless bug, is never the right way to go. When I see them in my house or my office, (and I do!) I just usher them outside or down the toilet. I have NEVER sprayed for them in either place, and I get my exterminator for free! Let that be your guide...
Nice to hear from you again, stop in anytime!
