As far as doing it without insecticides, it might be a possibility, but you'll have to keep at it. It's probably a lot easier to get a pro to do it. If you do, forget the biggies, go for a local guy, probably a well-recommended independent would be best. The big guys will get more money from you than a local guy would, and they all use the same stuff.
Talk to your exterminator, make sure he knows your concerns, he can use insecticides that WON'T give you any trouble, he knows what to use in sensitive situations.
This will give you better results than doing it yourself, the chemicals you get over the counter can be VERY irritating - moreso than what the exterminator uses!
