Sarah, they can climb right up the side of your house if there were no other way.... I've seen them do that on an aluminum sided house. They can do that on steel siding too.

Best to trap the offenders, not all squirrels will do that. Don't entice them around your home by feeding wildlife, and when they get "too many," trap some more.
