If they're running right through it your solution is easy. Got some sewing thread or fishing line? Wrap some across the cage over the treadle. Maybe even a loop or two loosely under the treadle itself and tie it off on a bar of the cage wall.

When the little buggers run through, they'll either trip the treadle with the loop around it or their momentum will be stopped and they'll fall enough to stumble on the treadle.

You're smarter than they are.
