I'd suggest next time you take your automotive bungee cord and strap down both latches. You need to traverse the cord under the trap, so be careful. Either wear gloves or just make sure your hand doesn't get too close to the trap.
Whenever I pick up a trap with a squirrel in it, I'm always impressed at their frantic power. Sometimes the cage swings violently, especially if the critter I got is greater than about 2lbs. And from expereince, it's always the TOP door that will open when you tip the trap tall-wise, if you dont have a bungee. The lower door should remain closed.
