All out war is correct. Innocent bystandards? More like future enemy recruits! From my experience (which is limited) 1 squirrel is never the problem. It's either a pair or a family. I'd suggest leaving the trap out with fresh bait at least 2+ weeks after you think you've caught the last one. And as I am discovering - new squirrels will find there way back in, or make their way in.
The original holes I had in my attic were; a plastic attic vent (replaced with aluminum), and a sagging gutter + soffit that the squirrels had chewed through. Now on the entirely opposite side of the house, the new ones have drilled a new hole.
Although I have to agree with you, the worst squirrel catch I've had (the one I feel most 'sorry' about) was the one I caught in winter, forgot to check the trap that afternoon (abscent minded) and found it frozen inside the trap the next morning. The end result was the same, but the process was probably more grueling.
But I wouldn't let it phase you too long. You're doing what you have to do.
