Hot pepper extract - mace - pepper spray - capsacin (the chemical in peppers). Find the place the squirrel is chewing, and spray the underside (in hopes the rain wont wash it away in the first 24hrs).

Supposidly squirrels are super sensitive to capsacin and will refuse to eat it. Likewise, putting lots jalapeno seeds in your bird feeder should keep the squirrel unhappy enough to leave it alone. *note* birds are not sensitive to its hotness, only mammals.

I don't know any METHODS of application other than perhaps trying it with your wife's mace-can.
