They make hardware cloth from galvanized steel wire - impervious to squirrels, but not bugs. You have to use both. And hardware cloth is difficult to handle, I don't think you want to do all your screens with hardware cloth. They make half inch and quarter inch - half inch is cheaper (less metal).

The trap should be a Hava-Hart 1040 - if it's a big squirrel, you may have trouble with a smaller trap.
