You only have one trap, I guess. Based on what you say, you could trap outside for awhile, but close off the entrance into the attic from the garage, if you can. And if you can, use cardboard and duct tape. You want it closed, but you also want to know if anything else is still interested in getting in or getting out. If noting bothers it for a few days, put the hatch door back in.
You have to keep watching, because they often look for other ways, and if there are any, they'll find 'em!
Reduce the population of squirrels so that they're not crawling all over the place, all the time. Like you see at city parks. Then keep watch, when they start to increase (they will!) cull the population a bit. Good for everybody, including the squirrels.
