John -- Thanks so much for your prompt reply. You're so kind and amazing. Wish you were local so I could use your services.
I assume it's possible the rolled up unused insulation I described acts as a kind of bunker. I don't recall hearing any noise beyond that corner of the attic.So maybe the animals are comfy in the nest and don't move about much. Since, as you say, squirrels are "sight" animals, am I correct in assuming the exterminator should have moved the peanut butter slab much closer than 10 yards from the nest and in the animals line of vision, or am I too picky???? Please let me know.
I appreciate your idea of leaving the light on. Also, you should know that about a month ago I noticed that the outside the house, in the same corner, the gutter was pulled away from the roofing and I had the area repaired with a new soffit and then sealed. The repair man found a nest there.
