And squirrels will eat young shoots of almost anything, but so will a lot of creatures, depending on where you live. They can also jump, from the ground, a good 9 feet. I've seen them walk right up vertical aluminum siding or a concrete wall. Pretty amazing animals, actually!

Rats will leave other evidence, their burrows will be close and you will usually see other signs of their habitation.

If it happens at night, chances say the animal may be nocturnal.

You get the picture, you have to do a bit of detective work to see what's going on. Depending on your knowledge, and your persistence, you can find out after a few days and nights. It does take time and effort to do this, and perhaps a little study about the animals in your area too.
