Live trap. When he/she is in the trap, secure the trap so the doors will not open and you can upend the trap to positions that will allow you to check and see what it is.

And not all squirrels follow the breeding dates, so I would do it anyway. If you have an obvious mom, you can decide whether to take her or let her go.
