Four feet, eh? I'll bet the squirrels love that.... When they have that much stuff to work with, they tunnel through it extensively. They can ruin it too.
TRAPPING IN THE ATTIC
Set up a sheet of plywood big enough to give you stable support. On the plywood you chum and set up your trap. Bait, but disable the trap until the squirrel(s) are entering the trap with confidence and taking the bait. TAKE YOUR TIME!
If you don't trap in the attic, you'll have to trap outside. Do so right under their entrance point. Follow the same rules as above, and you'd be wise to put each and every one down.
