First off, thank you so much for having this page. We have read all about catching squirrels, but so far have not had any success. There are (at least) 3 squirrels living on top of the damper in our chimney, just above the fireplace. We do have a chimney cap, but they pulled back a corner of this and got in. They are fearless, it seems, because opening and closing the damper with them on top of it, and even touching them with fireplace tools or a grip-stick (this is what Animal Control used) does not make them run from the nest. I have a trap in the bottom of the fireplace with peanut butter, potato chips, and shortbread cookies, hoping the variety will help here, because after 5 days the squirrels have been down into the fireplace, but have yet to go into the trap with just peanut butter. They even opened the fireplace doors and visited our Christmas tree on one trip. We know they will come down into the fireplace, and we will keep trying, but do you think it will help if we re-seal the chimney cap BEFORE the squirrels are gone? Will this force them to the trap for food, or will they just break out? They seem fearless!
